RESEARCH PROJECTS

CONTINENTAL CRUST GENERATION

My research work seeks to constrain the possible mechanisms by which magmatism with continental characteristics and juvenile continental crust is generated.

VOLCANIC HAZARDS AND GEOCHRONOLOGY

Through  careful stratigraphic work and C14 age determinations, I have been able to reconstruct the volcanic history of several  volcanic centers and hence, their volcanic hazards

EMPLACEMENT OF LARGE IGNEOUS INTRUSIONS

Using structural and chemical tools my group is trying to determine the mechanisms of emplacement of large igneous bodies such as the Pioneer and Boulder Batholiths

VIRTUAL FIELD EXPERIENCES

The virtual field experiences will create an immersive, realistic environment where students can practice the tools of geological mapping, stratigraphic analyses, outcrop description, sample description, three-dimensional thinking

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: CONTINENTAL CRUST GENERATION

OUR WORK IN THE TALAMANCA CORDILLERA HAS PRODUCED AN UPDATED GEOLOGIC MAP FOR THE CHIRRIPO NATIONAL PARK SUMMIT AREA. WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO IDENTIFY EXCITING FORMATIONS NOT MAPPED BEFORE. WE ARE NOW PREPARING SAMPLES FOR GEOCHRONOLOGICAL AR/AR ANALYSES. ONCE THESE RESULTS ARE IN, WE WILL BE ABLE TO PUT INTO CONTEXT OUR CHEMICAL DATA TO PRODUCE A MODEL FOR THE GEOCHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF THE MAGMATIC UNITS IN THE REGION.
